So, you've picked your Starter Pokemon and beaten your friendly rival Hau for the first time. It's time to hit up Route 1 of Pokemon Sun & Moon.

This walkthrough is going to keep things simple. We're not going to write out detailed strings of endless prose telling you where to walk and what to press point-to-point. Instead we're going to streamline things down: we'll talk instead about each area of Pokemon Sun & Moon you'll encounter, listing off the Pokemon that can be caught there, items that can be found there and so on.

Pokemon Sun & Moon - Route 1

Here on Route 1 you'll encounter your first wild Pokemon and your first rival trainers who you can battle for cash. There's also a smattering of freebie items you can pick up across the route - all of which will come very much in handy.

Iki Town Visit #2: Festival Time

Take your time getting through Route 1 if you want - there's plenty of Pokemon there to catch and you're in no rush.

After getting through Route 1 you'll end up at the festival in Iki Town. Hau wants to battle again as part of the festivities. It'd be rude to say no!

Rival Battle: Hau

Hau's team will be the following:

Given that this is still an early-game battle, it should still be no struggle. Smash him!

After the battle there'll be some more story chatter and you'll be given a Z-Ring and told how to use it.

Hau'oli Outskirts - to Kukui's Lab

Lillie will now escort you to the Pokemon Lab - though by escort she and the game really mean just point you ion the right direction. That involves a brief jaunt down to the Hau'oli Outskirts area, just south of your house.

After some story chatter in the professor's lab you'll be treated to a Rotom Dex and be prodded towards a Pokemon Center and the Trainer's School, our next destination. Hit this link to head straight there, but before you go, do remember there's some optional content & areas you can return to here later on...

Optional Content: Melemele Sea

The Melemele Sea area is attached to the Hau'oli Outskirts area but can't be accessed until you get Lapras and can use it to get into the sea and swim. You'll find new items, Pokemon and Trainer Battles here.

You'll be able to come back here and get access to this area sooner than you think.

Optional Content: Ten Carat Hill

Ten Carat Hill can be accessed from the Melemele Sea area or even from Hau'oli Outskirts. One way or another it'll require a Tauros ride to access in order to smash the rocks at the entrance, though you'll also find that one particular puzzle in there requires use of a Machamp ride to complete. You'll be able to get access to this area very soon.

Inside you'll find a small selection of hidden items, plus some new Pokemon - some exclusive to this area. There's three different places to encounter Pokemon here - inside the cave themselves, in the water inside the caves, and in the tall grass in the 'Farthest Hollow', the outside area you reach at the end of the caves.
